The History Of Roulette In Europe And The United States

You can learn more about the history of roulette from many sites on the Internet.  There are different versions coming from different sources.  Many historians believe the game originated in France in 1655 and reached its peak at the time of the revolution of 1789.  Roulette was said to have been played a lot by many monks and was also a very relevant game in the city of Paris.  In French, the game literally means small wheel.  While the name is definitely French in origin, there are reasons to believe that it may have not originally come from France.

There are a couple of versions of online roulette available namely the European and the American. The European version is a conglomeration of a number of games.  Sources came from the English wheel which is an unusual odds game; there are also some Italian influences. Later  it became  popular in other parts of Europe, particularly in Germany where it gained prominence when the zero was included in the wheel.  During the medieval dark ages, the game was shunned by many groups of people.  However, this did not dim its popularity as it gained more popularity in Europe and the Americas.

In the United States, roulette was first played at about the year 1800.  It was said to have been brought by French settlers to Louisiana escaping the horrors brought by the French revolution.  Its popularity spread when it became the game of choice in New Orleans. The American version uses 28 numbers and uses 0 and double zero as choices.
